Lakson Investments 1st SOP Unified Marathon 2016
Every year SOP used to conduct a walk-a-thon to create awareness for Intellectually Disabled people. With the aim of creating a greater impact, this year SOP decided to do things differently. Karachi and its people had recently joined the fitness bandwagon and we decided to bank on that and organize a Unified Marathon.
The event was picking up momentum when Lakson Investments’ CEO, Babar Lakhani read about it on social media and being a fitness enthusiast, wanted to partner with us. The organizing committee consisted of SOP staff members, Lakson staff members and CORE, a fitness gym in Karachi. With their expertise, we pulled off Pakistan’s 1st Unified Marathon.
Approximately 2,000 people attended the event, with 600 Intellectually Disabled athletes. Athletes from local organizations like Deaf Reach School, Nasra School, Links school also attended the event as Unified Partners. Local government housing Authorities and security forces like Police and Rangers were extremely cooperative and played a big role in making this a success.
There were three race categories the 5KM Fun Run and 10KM competitive and 5KM Walk. People of all ages, gender and disabilities attended the event, running side by side.
The aim of this event was to promote inclusion and fitness. It would be safe to say that SOP achieved both. Our vision is to organize a half marathon next year in Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad.
Some of our weaknesses were lack of manpower, enough time to organize the event and hot weather.
